From the article: A Better Kind of Earth Day
Earth Day ought to be more muscular and adult than just smiling at flowers and sunny days. After all, Earth Day began as a vibrant teach-in. What new traditions should we be starting? What's Your Idea?
Earth as Soil
- Go to your garden and interact with the soil. Dig in it, fertilize, plant something. You should know that the origins and eventual results of your garden are much beyond your control. How many centuries did it take for the soil to develop? Where did your plants originate? What kind of 'weeds' are growing, probably more efficiently than your crops? Which insects are needed to pollinate? Which insects eat your crops? Will the weather be wet or dry? Can you provide enough water? This is a microcosm of human use of the earth. If it works well for you don't claim too much credit. Earth is full of its own productive gardens. Enjoy and imitate them.

My opinion of Earth Day...
- The whole concept of Earth Day seems wrong. What is to celebrate? Our so called "luck" that we are here? Our need to protect the "helpless Earth" from ourselves? Who do we think we are? I think we celebrate Earth everyday by simply living on it. If it is something that we should remember every year on a certain day it is our own fragile condition and disposition towards self-destruction. That is something to remember, not Earth Day, but Human Day. Because we cannot destroy Earth, no matter how hard we try. But we can destroy ourselves.
