From the article: The Parade of Heroes
The more years we spend in a field, the more numerous grow our mentors and colleagues who have died. The greatest Earth scientists often have medals and prizes named for them by their peers; others are simply honored with foundations, monuments, park benches or humbler contributions by their friends. All of these are worthy. Share with us one of your ideas or stories. What have you done?
A gift for my nephew
- I had a nephew who died unexpectedly just as he was beginning to pursue a degree in geology. One thing that especially hurt was the loss of our future relationship as peers and colleagues. I made a contribution to the geology museum at his college because I knew it was a place he had enjoyed, and because museums are where so many young people are impressed with rocks, fossils and geologic history. -- Andrew Alden
