Where This Rock Is From (place, type of locality, etc.)
Don't know where it came from. It was in a pile of rocks left in the cutting lab at Old Dominion University many years ago when I was a geology student. The lab tech said to take what we wanted and this rock was not only pretty but a great example of gneiss.
What This Rock Is
A weathered gneiss cobble sliced in half. This is probably a granitic gneiss.
What I Like About This Rock
Absolutely everything. The contrasting minerals and the almost uniform banding of the 2 colors make this rock unique and interesting. I use this rock during my lecture about the metamorphic rocks in my Earth Science classes because it's such a great example.
Advice
- I photograph strongly textured rocks against a smooth, one color background.
