The original particles of the lime sediment have become lithified due to the effects of pressure and mild heat that solidifies rock. The color of limestone tends to lie in the range of white to dark gray owing to the presence of organic matter, though it also takes warmer hues from clay minerals.

Hand specimens are preferred by rock collectors; they're large enough to give a good look at the material without being too heavy.
