Conglomerate is a sedimentary rock of great variety, the lithified version of gravel. It is predominantly particles larger than sand that are at least somewhat rounded. It generally has a distinct break between large clasts (phenoclasts) and much smaller matrix clasts of sand or even clay size. That is, it displays some sorting. The sorting and the rounding both point to transport by rivers or the presence of a coastal setting.
