Metamorphic Rock Gallery

By , About.com Guide

Metamorphic rocks are the most complex rock class, forming as they do by the compression and chemical alteration of other rocks, both sedimentary and igneous. This gallery starts with the rocks derived from sedimentary rocks (also called metasedimentary rocks or the pelitic sequence), then presents those derived from igneous rocks (called metaigneous rocks or the basaltic sequence). I also have a larger A-to-Z gallery of specific metamorphic rock types.
