Basalt Picture Gallery

From Andrew Alden, About.com

Basalt is the most common volcanic rock, constituting nearly all of the oceanic crust and covering parts of the continents. This gallery presents some of basalt's variety, on land and in the ocean.

Pictures 1–3, 9–12 and 14–16 are flood basalt; pictures 4, 7 and 8 are ocean island basalt; 5, 6 and 13 are continental basalt; and 17 is an ophiolite basalt. Learn more about these in About Basalt.
