Just as hanging valleys have a disconnect with the valleys they "hang" over, hanging glaciers tumble to the valley glaciers below. (more below)

These three hanging glaciers are in the Chugach Mountains of Alaska. The glacier in the valley below is covered with rock debris. The small hanging glacier in the middle barely reaches the valley floor, and most of its ice is carried down in icefalls and avalanches rather than glacial flow.
