Organic or Biological Weathering

Sediment is not a dead zone of eroded mineral fragments waiting to become rock again. It becomes home to living things whose work is an example of organic (biological) weathering, a significant geologic process on land and the seafloor. Organic weathering includes both chemical weathering and mechanical weathering processes, often in combination.
