The upturned sandstones near Golden have thick beds of commercial-quality clay between them, which were mined for more than a century to make the bricks of Denver. When the Parfet family's clay mine closed, the property was reclaimed and developed into the Triceratops Trail, coexisting with the Fossil Trace Golf Course. The Triceratops Trail encompasses the Late Cretaceous dinosaur tracks and other fine fossils of this unique locality as part of the Parfet Prehistoric Preserve.
