SAFOD is directed by Mark Zoback of the U.S. Geological Survey. This is the highlight of his professional career, and on 2 September 2004 his group hosted a media day at the SAFOD site. You can tell that Mark is a hard-core, eminent scientist because he has his own personal hard hat. One of his personal skills, probably not taught at Stanford, is talking to the public to explain his work in plain language. It is a precious gift among scientists, and any kid looking to enter the field should keep that in mind. When SAFOD is active, you can follow developments every day at the SAFOD site.
