View Northwest from Fremont Peak

From Andrew Alden, About.com

The fault runs southeastward across this view from the eastern shoulder of Fremont Peak. (more below)

The hill in the middle distance is in front of Pajaro Gap, where the rivers of the interior cut across the southern Santa Cruz Mountains. On the far side of the Gap, the San Andreas fault is at the edge of the photo. The valley at the center holds the fault trace and Anzas Road. The light-colored patch to its right is the roadcut of US route 101, which is otherwise invisible in its course across the view. Here the fault takes a small westward jog and runs down a more subtle canyon, crosses the San Jaun Highway and passes the right side of San Juan Bautista at lower center right. The light spot on the right (east) edge of town is the Mission San Juan Bautista, built right next to the fault and shown in the next two photos.

The largest mountain on the left horizon is Loma Prieta, just a few kilometers from the epicenter of the 1989 earthquake. A curve in the fault concentrates tectonic forces there to raise the Santa Cruz Mountains.

See more photos from Fremont Peak at the beginning of the photo-tour of the creeping section of the San Andreas fault, which goes from San Juan Bautista to Parkfield.
