Here's the view south over the Cholame ("sha-LOMM") Valley from the meeting place of Vineyard Canyon and Slacks Canyon roads. This wide downdropped block marks an offset between two strands of the San Andreas fault.

Very near this point is the south end of the creeping segment. Beyond the Cholame Valley is the locked segment of the fault, a 300-kilometer stretch that ruptured in the great 1857 Fort Tejon earthquake. The Cholame Valley is covered in more detail in a separate Parkfield photo-tour, but there's one more stop on this trip that is mandatory for the faultline tourist.
