Several ridges in the Santa Ynez Mountains are topped with rocky bluffs like these: strongly consolidated rocks that resist erosion. Some have prominent beds of conglomerate, and from that I presume the rest of the rock is sandstone. No doubt there are rock climbers who can look at this photo and tell me exactly what and where it is.
Not far to the east of here is the last stronghold of the endangered California condor, the largest bird in North America. Perhaps a century ago they swooped and soared from this rampart, looking for carrion.
