Predawn in the central Fairweather Range. Small orographic clouds form as moist air riding over the peaks falls below the dew point. This view displays the jagged topography of a heavily glaciated region. Severe erosion carves the peaks into horns and aretes—landforms first named in the European Alps. It also shows why I shot twice as much film as I brought with me.

"We scientists are getting close to each other, and the coming arrival at Juneau is making us a little heady. Often we visit in our rooms and drink beer and talk. I'll miss the contact when we finish the cruise."
