"The first few days of the cruise are disorienting. The ship is unfamiliar, full of cubbyholes and passages, uniformed officers. We in the scientific crew don't know what we're doing yet. The hours are strange, and I have to establish a sleeping schedule. Up to now I've slept whenever I could. I was seasick this afternoon, partly because of the slow swell, partly the oily spicy lunch. (The food is good but not great--we all think the Sea Sounder's cook is better.) Now I'm taking bodine and that works real well.
"We've reached our first coring sites, off Cape Yakataga, but the shore is out of sight. It's been mostly cloudy, with some rain. Work has reached a routine by now."
