I had a full day and two nights in Kodiak before we set sail. Much of the time, the scientific crew took little field trips or visited Kodiak's many bars, but I also got out on my own. Sunday morning I strolled along the shore of Women's Bay and took some pictures.

Summer on Kodiak Island, Gulf of Alaska. The days are cool and the water is very cold, but it's light nearly around the clock. All photos (c) 2002 Andrew Alden, licensed to About.com, Inc.

Our home for the next two weeks was the NOAA Ship Discoverer, a hard-working vessel, built for science, that served 30 years before being decommissioned in 1996.

NOAA Ship Discoverer lies at anchor in Women's Bay, west of Kodiak Harbor. She carried a scientific party of 12 and about twice that number in officers and crew.

Most of the following pages contain excerpts from the letters I wrote home during the cruise.
