Round Lake is part of Green Lakes State Park, just east of Syracuse. This lake sits in the Silurian rocks of the Salina Formation. Thick salt beds in the Syracuse Member dissolved and led to the collapse of the lake bottom; it is similar to the cenotes of the Yucatán in that respect. The deep water is so salty that the lake cannot overturn. See more about that on the meromictic lake page. There is an interesting page on rootsweb.com with some history and early scientific thinking about this area.
Green Lakes State Park is a lovely place for a walk or a picnic. Round Lake has a near-twin, Green Lake, with swimming. There's also a golf course. But what caught my eye on the way out of the park was the view north, shown next.
