September 21: "I went ashore and walked the 2-mile road to Unalaska. They have a new-looking schoolhouse, a city hall and the oldest Russian church in the state. A fresh new granite marker outside city hall is dedicated to the islanders in World War II by the Japanese and American armed forces. I went past the Elbow Room, the oldest bar, I'm told in Alaska. A small peak-roofed house of a violent greenish-blue."
