Sand Point is a small village in the Shumagin Islands, an archipelago that lies south of the main Aleutian chain. Like all of southern Alaska, it is subject to great earthquakes. As we learn more about the tectonics and seismic history of this area, the people who live here will benefit through lives and property saved, not just frequently asked scientific questions answered.
"Monday night [October 4] we pulled in the streamer and set sail for Sand Point, and just in time because the wind came up with snow squalls. Fortunately we were headed dead into the wind, not across it, which would have meant universal seasickness and things falling over. But the wind (40 knots) cut our speed down so much it was a little close getting to the plane. As a result we didn't get to visit Sand Point. Then the long flight home began."
