September 20: "Long trip up. Clouds moved in north of California, and until the central Gulf of Alaska could see nothing. The St. Elias Range stood above the clouds, though, and those huge snowy peaks looked like old friends. At the Anchorage airport, boarded a turboprop for a long ride down the Alaska Peninsula. The plane was enveloped in white the whole way."

"The approach to Dutch Harbor/Unalaska is dramatic, the plane cruising past a tall green-brown mountain wall then swooping 120 degrees to a hidden runway and a battered wooden airport. A man from the ship met us and took all of us (party of 11) and luggage to a wharf. The Lee is anchored in the bay and we take the skiff to get to and from town."
