The inflatable boat we brought with us was wholly inadequate for the Alsek's swift waters and long distances required. So we hired a local man, Harold Robbins, here with his family for the salmon season, to ferry us up and down the Alsek. Luckily I had enough cash with me to keep things dignified, and because the silver salmon season wouldn't begin for another two days, he was free. (He also fed us some exquisite smoked fish and did us other favors.) In his boat there were times when we could stop looking out for icebergs to take in some incomparable scenery, like Mount Crillon and the Fairweather Range (see more of them in the Gulf of Alaska cruise).
