This view across the Columbia to the Oregon side at a bend in the river. A huge expanse of flood basalts was stripped to bare rock here by the Missoula glacial outburst floods in Ice Age times. The evidence shows that the floods were hundreds of meters deep here. (c) 2005 Andrew Alden, licensed to About.com, Inc. (fair use policy)
