A roadcut on US 197 north of Maupin, Oregon, displays all kinds of lava flows. Here a thick flow was emplaced on top of an earlier flow that had a hummocky surface, perhaps due to being emplaced in lobes. In many places such a flow bakes the existing soil into a reddish natural brick. (c) 2005 Andrew Alden, licensed to About.com, Inc. (fair use policy)
