The Deschutes River drains the east side of the Oregon Cascades, cutting through the western edge of the Columbia Plateau on its way to the Columbia River. This view is just upstream from Maupin. A hundred years ago, there was a hotly contested railway war here as competing syndicates laid rails up both sides of this valley. They were the last U.S. railroads to be built using hand labor and black powder. The Deschutes is famous for trout fishing and kayaking. (c) 2005 Andrew Alden, licensed to About.com, Inc.
