A short distance north of Lake Temescal is the Gateway Emergency Preparedness Exhibit Center. It was constructed in the aftermath of the great 1991 Oakland Hills wildfire, but it has good exhibits on the earthquake hazard as well. The view from the platform encompasses San Francisco, the bay and the Golden Gate. The high ground and basins in this panorama reflect the dynamics of the larger plate-boundary setting, which includes a degree of east-west compression in addition to the predominant north-south lateral motion. The compression has raised the hills we stand on.
