The Hayward Fault in Oakland, California

Sheffield Village, built starting in 1939, is a nearly pristine example of a late Depression-era planned neighborhood. The Hayward fault trace runs right through the houses visible at left center and through the notch on the horizon at right. The notch and the hill at center are in San Leandro, across the valley below the San Pablo Reservoir dam. Both shaking and flooding, therefore, threaten this locale.
