Steens Mountain, Oregon, USA

U.S. Bureau of Land Management photo by Mark Armstrong. (fair use policy)

Steens Mountain is a large fault-block range in southeastern Oregon, part of the great Basin and Range extensional province. This view shows the steep eastern face of the mountain, seen across the Alvord Desert. The rock layers of the range are tilted away, toward the west. This fascinating region is preserved under a broad-ranging agreement among government agencies, private landowners, and a quasi-governmental council. See lots more about the mountain at a Web site created by geology students at Portland State University.
