Round Top, California, USA

(c) 2003 Andrew Alden, licensed to About.com, Inc. (fair use policy)

Round Top is the most recognizable feature in the Oakland Hills, across the bay from San Francisco, although it's just outside the Oakland city limits and sits behind the main crest. It has the youngest rocks exposed in or near Oakland: 10-million-year-old volcanic rocks of the Moraga Formation. The land around Round Top was basalt quarries until the mid-20th century, but it's now preserved in Sibley Volcanic Preserve, part of the East Bay Regional Parks system. The wildflowers are wonderful here.
