Lover's Leap, California, USA

(c) 2002 Andrew Alden, licensed to About.com, Inc. (fair use policy)

There are many peaks named Lover's Leap, whether any lovers ever leapt off them or not. This one overlooks state Route 152 on the climb to Pacheco Pass, in the central California Coast Ranges. It is a knob of a hard metamorphosed basalt or greenstone typical of the Franciscan complex. Much greenstone is actually dark gray-green or black, but lichens covering the bare rock add their color to make up any difference. It complements the local oak forest and golden fields beneath in this summer scene.
