Lone Pine Peak, California, USA

Lone Pine Peak looms huge and craggy over the main eastern route to Mount Whitney, in the southern Sierra Nevada. But in this view, snapped from a high shoulder to the north, the mountain shows its lyrical side. The village of Lone Pine, on the floor of the Owens Valley deep in the shadow of its namesake granite mountain, is well known among Sierra climbers, desert rats, and other outdoor types.
