Goat Mountain, Texas, USA

U.S. Geological Survey photo by R. L. Brown (fair use policy)

Goat Mountain is one of many unsung peaks in Big Bend National Park, part of the Chisos Mountains. In fact, it's one of dozens of Goat Mountains found in 13 American states. This particular Goat Mountain is made largely of thick andesitic lava flows from nearby Sierra Quemado Volcano, exposed unusually well here. Geographically speaking, it lies in the Chihuahua Desert.

This is one of the most isolated parts of Texas. For many years, local people have reported the appearance of the mysterious Marfa lights at night out in the desert. See lots more about them from Southwestern Visitors Guide Elizabeth Mitchell.
