Gable Mountain, Montana, USA

Gable Mountain is near the Canadian border in Glacier National Park. The uplifted sedimentary rocks that make up this and many other Rocky Mountains peaks are well displayed. In the foreground is a well-developed set of stone stripes. Classified as a type of patterned ground, stone stripes form in periglacial areas, where the melting and freezing of permafrost is an important geological process. Exactly how they form is not clear.
