Dead Horse Peak is found near a pass and a lake of the same name, along the crest of the Uinta Mountains in northeastern Utah.
The rocks of the Uinta Mountains are extremely old and of metamorphic types. Another unusual feature of the Uintas is their east-west orientation, unlike nearly all other American mountains. Finally, the range was heavily glaciated during the last few million years, accounting for its alpine appearance. The steep sides of Dead Horse Peak are cirques, and the mountain itself is very nearly a horn.
