Scrap-Metal Dinosaur

This splendid Tyrannosaurus rex guards the gas station at the intersection of Panoche Road and Interstate 5 in central California, across from the Apricot Tree Restaurant. Its creator is Carmon Neff, a welder in Chowchilla who has a way with windmills, too.

It brings to mind the expression "dead dinosaurs" that kids use to refer to gasoline. Surely the artist, in recycling dead farm equipment, is saying something about the American farmer too. Public art with such charm is so rare that I have a close-up of it below, so you can enjoy the workmanship. Next time you're driving by, whether you're going north-south between the Bay area and Los Angeles or east-west between Mendota and Paicines, make a stop and consider the dinosaur.
