Ice Field

U.S. Geological Survey photo by Bruce Molnia (fair use policy)
A mountain basin or plateau can gather a great thickness of ice and snow that covers all or most of the rock surface, not flowing in an organized way. The body of ice is called an ice field, and the protruding rocks within an ice field are nunataks. This picture shows the Harding Ice Field in Kenai Fjords National Park, Alaska. A valley glacier drains its far end at the top of the photo, flowing down to the Gulf of Alaska. Ice fields of regional or continental size are called ice sheets or ice caps.
