Gypsum City

(c) 2005 Andrew Alden, licensed to About.com, Inc. (fair use policy)

On a field trip in the Panoche Hills of central California, my party came upon this odd set of gypsum blades. It was too neat and regular to be a natural formation, nor was there anything else even similar to it elsewhere. I conclude that it was a bit of whimsy erected by a visitor, a genuine piece of folk Earth art. As it happens, my eyes have been sharpened to this medium after researching a set of articles on Earth art.
