Piedmont Glacier

Piedmont glaciers form where valley glaciers exit from the mountains and meet flat ground. There they spread out in a fan or lobe shape, like thick batter poured from a bowl. This picture shows the piedmont segment of Taku Glacier near the shore of Taku Inlet in southeastern Alaska. Piedmont glaciers commonly are a merger of several valley glaciers.
