Stone from Blarney Castle

(c) 2006 Andrew Alden, licensed to About.com, Inc. (fair use policy)

The Blarney Stone is a particular block of limestone in the battlements of Blarney Castle, in County Cork, Eire. Anyone who succeeds in kissing it is said to earn the gift of persuasive speech. It surely qualifies as a famous stone, a geologic object that has acquired mystical human significance.

This stone is mounted on the wall of a casino on Virginia Street, the main drag of Reno, Nevada. If you believe in the magic of the Blarney Stone, then it's no stretch to find good luck in this piece of the castle itself. I did not examine it closely as its surface looked rather unsanitary; also, I did not have my rock hammer handy.
