Hector Mine Earthquake, California, 16 October 1999

ANZA Seismic Network
The University of California campus at San Diego's seismic network recorded the quake and presents many seismograms.

Did You Feel It?
The U.S. Geological Survey's do-it-yourself site for compiling felt reports from people like yourselves was on the job during the quake. The Web is perfect for this sort of thing.

Hector Mine Earthquake (SCEC)
The summary on the Southern California Earthquake Center site has a nice fault map of the region and information about its faults.

Hector Mine Earthquake Preliminary Fact Sheet
The University of Nevada at Reno presents a brief summary, including reports from Nevada.

Hector Mine Quake Home Page (USGS)
The U.S. Geological Survey shows what the Web is good for—links to everything the scientists are doing. This site made scientific history.

Preliminary Analysis of the Hector Mine Earthquake (UNR)
The University of Nevada at Reno did its own analysis of the quake, including a look at the regional stress pattern and the possibility of clustering. Updated 22 October.

"SAR Interferometry of the Hector Mine Earthquake"
An article submitted to Geophysical Research Letters by a group of U.C. San Diego scientists maps the quake movement with space radar, along with subtle motions on neighboring faults.

Strong-Motion Records
Complete processed records from the National Strong-Motion Program's stations throughout Los Angeles. The system got a good workout.

Trapped-Wave Experiment
A line of seismometers directly on the fault recorded data that promise insights into the behavior of the materials within the fault zone. This report also shows the dry humor typical of many scientists.

"Viewing Earthquake Effects in Pendulum Clocks"
"Crackpot inventor" Bryan Mumford monitored the effects of the quake on his houseful of pendulum clocks—in Santa Barbara, 400 kilometers from Hector Mine. A superclock in New Jersey detected it, too.
