What Is Geology's Nobel Prize?

By September 30, 2013

Follow me on:

This year's Nobel Prizes are about to be announced for achievements in physics, medicine, economics, literature, peace, and chemistry. In mathematics, the Fields Medal is the equivalent. In geology, there's——what? I've looked around, and while I can report that one or two awards come close, even they don't have Alfred Nobel's touch of genius, the criterion that sets the Nobel Prize above all others. And even those prizes won't be awarded in 2013. But the 2014 Vetlesen Prize is due out in a few months, so we have that to look forward to.

By the way, the announcement from Scientific American that the Physics prize is going to the Higgs Boson is a spoof, an humorous vignette.
