Sometimes it helps that my dad is a naval historian. A sentence in his book Flush Decks and Four Pipes led me to this forgotten topic in seismo-forensics: was the Point Honda naval disaster related to the Great Kanto earthquake across the Pacific? Ninety years later we know more about tsunamis and the earthquakes that cause them. Some claimed a connection at the time; some cling to that possibility today in hopes of righting a historical injustice. But it's no longer as easy to call upon tsunamis as handy "acts of God" that may excuse bad human judgment.
