The Tin Men of Cornwall

By April 21, 2013

Follow me on:

The mining people of Cornwall have worked their granites since before Roman times. This long history has marked the Cornish character and infused the Cornish culture with traits that they carried to mining districts all over the world. The golden thread of Cornish progressivism and communitarianism rises again and again in American history. I consider the Cornish the salt of the Earth. My newly updated article goes into more detail.

I only recently learned that my mother’s family is from Cornwall (I always thought they were from East England). I have a clear memory, from 1964, of when I noticed an adit in the bluff while playing in the sandy gravel at Coyote Point on the San Francisco Bay. I was driven to investigate but my parents thought better of allowing their 3 year old to venture in (such disappointment!) It truly is in my blood.
