The last of the special designated days in Earth Science Week is Geologic Map Day. This is dear to my heart because geologic maps, to me, are the best way to contemplate how different the world looks when you gain a bit of geologic awareness. Underneath the civilized world of crisp black lines and precise borders, the geologic map show us a primordial landscape of rocks and faults, clues to an impossibly ancient world that has tantalizing relationships with our own. Geologic maps entice you to get out in the countryside and see what those lines and pattern represent on the ground. And geologic maps are full of color. Enjoy one today.
