The L'Aquila earthquake of 6 April 2009 took less than a minute to happen. The agonizing nightmare of the Italian justice system prosecuting seismologists on manslaughter charges for causing the deaths of the victims has crawled on until today, when the trial opened. I summarized its absurdity back in May, and I invite you to click the links there for more discussion. Today I'm here to point you to a news story from Nature by Stephen Hall, "Scientists on trial: At fault?" that gives more detail and analysis of this travesty than I've ever seen before. Well worth the read, plus some good comments from all viewpoints.
