It has been a wonderful week for fans of Kilauea volcano. A new fissure opened 5 March on the eastern flank near the Puu Oo eruptive center that is sending out fresh lava. It has been named Kamoamoa. At the same time, the lava lakes in Halemaumau and Puu Oo both drained spectacularly in a sign of plumbing readjustments in the magma chamber. The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory's update page for images is a feast for the eyes, with links to videos and lots of explanation.
