An industry geologist doing fieldwork in Alaska has survived a grizzly bear attacktwo of them, by the same bear, the Associated Press reports. Robert Miller was up in the Alaska Range prospecting for Millrock Resources last Sunday when the bear showed up without warning and charged him. His pistol was ineffective, but his protective crouch was. Even so, his ear was badly mauled and his limbs and torso were bitten. A former colleague of mine was severely injured by a bear in Alaska (she's still an Alaska geologist, though), so stories like this make me sit up and pay attention.
