Blue Diamond in the News (updated)

Friday December 5, 2008
diamondThe Wittelsbach diamond, a very large (35.56 carats) blue stone, will be auctioned by Christie's next week. (Take a look.) It is in the same league as the Hope diamond, but it's a bit smaller and its color is actually Fancy Deep Grayish Blue whereas the Hope (45.52 carats) is Fancy Dark Grayish Blue, the deepest rank of color.

Like the stereotype perfect martini, the blue diamond is pure except for the merest whisper of impurity—its crystal lattice of pure carbon has a few parts per billion of boron, coupled with a total absence of nitrogen (which makes diamonds yellow). Read more about diamond-the-mineral here.

UPDATE: the Wittelsbach sold for 16.4 million pounds, or approximately $683,000 per carat. Keep that in mind the next time you price a big blue.
