"The Changing Face of Titan"

Tuesday August 12, 2008
Saturn's moon Titan is a fascinating object for Earth scientists because it has so many Earthlike features: clouds, rain, lakes, sand dunes—but all of these involve methane, ethane and ice, not water and stone. The Cassini-Huyghens space mission has been gathering data from Titan for four years, and researcher Ralph Lorenz summarizes the Titanian marvels in the August Physics Today, a challenging magazine but still one of my favorites. It's such a must-read that I've added it to the Geology of Other Planets category. By the way, Lorenz does not use the terms arenite or psammite, but some day we will learn enough about Titanian rocks that he'll have to choose.
