The New York State Geo-Highway Map
Years ago, assembling my collection of state geologic maps (still the only one on the Web), I checked out New York state's Education Leaflet 33 from my local university map library and laboriously scanned the geologic map from it. I told you, "it's a tremendous bargain . . . just buy Educational Leaflet 33."
Finally I followed my own advice, in preparation for a trip to the northeastern states later this month, and the leaflet came this afternoon. It's even better than I remember. For one thing, it's designed not just for general readers, but "for students enrolled in earth science courses in New York." So it has cross sections and a big correlation chart for the state's named formations. It has a key map to some 80 different field trip guidebooks. And it has another map listing 67 state parks with geological features and 39 more "unique geological features" like the town of Herkimer (home of Herkimer diamonds), the Petrified Sea Gardens, Stark's Knob and a couple of spectacular angular unconformities. I am in awe. Buy it here.
By the way, I don't think I ever mentioned that the last time I was in New York I photographed Rip van Winkle.
